Harrison Speech Pathology’s autism therapy program benefits from our first-hand experience
The team at Harrison Speech Pathology have a unique understanding of Autism and Autism treatments. Our director Christine Harrison is the mother of a child living with Autism and an intellectual disability. This has had a significant impact on our treatments and understanding of the difficulties associated with Autism. We offer individualised treatments based on the client’s’ specific area of impairment.
What is Autism?
Autism is comprised of a triad of impairments – communication impairment, social skill deficits and the presence of restricted and repetitive behaviour. This triad all relates to how the individual communicates with and understands the world around them.
Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a spectrum. Every individual with ASD will have different presenting issues and different functional impairments which impact upon their daily living skills and abilities. Every person is different and requires a different treatment and therapy plan.
Can you diagnose and treat my child with Autism?
Autism diagnosis requires a paediatrician, child psychiatrist, or a clinical psychologist to diagnose your child.
The team at Harrison Speech Pathology in Newcastle can help clients with Autism. Intervention is based on maximising communication abilities, identifying skill strength and the key areas of functional impairment which need support and skill development. Each treatment plan is tailored to the client to ensure maximum results and engagement.
Harrison Speech Pathology focuses on client-lead therapy, engaging with each individual and incorporating their interests and hobbies within the treatment process. Our use of technology in treatment also generates a high level of engagement, making therapy enjoyable and fun.
